Since I have just started to learn how to paint with watercolors, I wasn’t sure which kind of paper I would prefer. When I ran across this sample pack with both artist and student grade paper in rough, cold, and hot pressed, I decided this would be a wonderful way to try several different kinds of paper. I painted the same scene on all 6 sheets – artist grade is on the left, student is on the right. Rough pressed is at the top, cold pressed in the middle, and hot pressed on the bottom. The artists rough pressed paper was my favorite to paint on, followed closely by the artist cold pressed. I didn’t care at all for the hot pressed. I was surprised to find such a difference between the artist and student papers, considering they look so close to each other before painting. I immediately labeled the back of each sheet in pencil when I opened the package – if I hadn’t done this I wouldn’t have a clue which paper was which – except for the hot pressed. But as I was painting, the differences in the paper quickly became obvious. The artists paper was so much more enjoyable to paint. Although the student grade is still really good paper, it’s better than anything else I’ve used so far. But the artist was just so much better. I’m so glad I tried this sample. Without it, I doubt I ever would have tried rough pressed paper. But it has quickly become my favorite type of paper!

I’m glad I got this paper pack. Nice, sturdy watercolor paper in a variety of textures. Accepts watercolor really well and I would purchase again.

The Baohong Sample packs are awesome…. just try them out if you are new to watercolor or a pro and trying out what Baohong has to offer. It turns out, I love the HP Artist’s paper and the CP Academy best for personal style and use. I’ve enjoyed playing with all of it though and found great aspects about each paper. Also fantastic for homeschooling or classes to demonstrate different papers.

The sample package of Baohon cotton watercolor paper was not quite as advertised, not having the variety in the numbers stated but still having all the types. The paper preformed well but not perfectly. (I use Arches as a comparison) but considering the price difference it is a good paper. The amount of sizing in the paper was unobtrusive and at 180 pound kept warping to a minimum with medium wet washes. It’s ability to resist abrasion was the one point that I noticed some weakness. I do pencil sketches then ink and erase the pencil. Some fuzziness was noticed when I had to erase more than once. Also when lifting color it seems soft.Overall it was a good paper great for field studies and for first attempt drawing. It’s lower cost allows my the liberty to experiment with cringing at the cost of wasted paper. This paper receives color well. I use M Graham, Renaissance, and Mission Gold paints and all of them preformed well.Overall a good paper that I will purchase again.
